spatial conditions

understanding of space

Operative Conditions was a focus on the study of spatial conditions. A Pattern Language by Christopher Alexander and Operative Design A Catalogue of Spatial Verbs by Anthony Di Mari and Nora Yoo both guided this study by providing specific operations to perform and specific conditions to design. The operations could only be performed on the site: a cube and a plane. The operations consisted of notch, split, inscribe, and fracture. Each of these operations performed would make the specific spatial conditions ultimately creating a proposal in which individuals can move through and experience the designed conditions. The conditions were entrance transition, interior light, connection to earth, and outdoor room.

Location: Auburn, AL

Program: Perform operations notch, split, fracture, and inscribe.

Role: Designer to use operations to create a cohesive space and for movement throughout.

Instructor: Margaret Fletcher and Rusty Smith, First Year Studio

Series of operations composed of notch, split, inscribe, and fracture. Notch is to design an entrance transition. Split is to design interior light. Inscribe is the connection to the earth. Fracture is to create an outdoor room.
